CARNIVAL WEEK

Bournemouth 2010 - A special year for Bournemouth, celebrating 200 years since Tregonwell founded the town. Bournemouth Carnival is very much part of celebrations having been in existence since around 1880. We were formally known as Bournemouth Regatta which revolved around the rowing and sailing regatta organised by the Westover Rowing Club. I cannot let this comment pass without saying how very sad it is to see the Westover Club loosing its spiritual home on the West Promenade - I believe it is called "Progress"!!

However, we are hoping that 2010 will be a new beginning for us as we have been offered a much more acceptable carnival route, which, if successful for us and the public, will remain in place for a good many years.

The Children's events and evening entertainment will remain the same, especially the sand castles and decorated boats that go back to the early 1900s at least.

I sincerely hope that the newly elected Carnival Committee can follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, especially Ken Baily and Tony Fail, Don Laws and David Beckett, who did so much to ensure that "Our" week has survived thus far during ever changing times.

A Happy Bi-Centenary to Bournemouth, Long May We Flourish!

Pat Fail, President
On behalf of Bournemouth Carnival Committee

2009 had some very mixed weather during Carnival Week but we soldiered on and were blessed with a beautiful day for our Carnival Procession. All of the photos taken during the week have been placed on our web-site, so hopefully no one will wonder what happened to their photo. If participants or sponsors would like copies please contact us. Displaying photos of all the events will, hopefully encourage local business concerns to assist us for, we hope, a very successful 2010 Carnival Week.
We Need You

The committee are all volunteers, no one is paid for any services rendered, so please, traders and financial services, who benefit so much from trading in our beautiful Town, become a greater part of the community and help the continuation of the town's oldest voluntary activities.

Bournemouth's 2009/2010 Carnival Queen .

The 2009 Carnival Queen Contest was once again held at the Marsham Court Hotel, Bournemouth, on Thursday 30th July. Judged by representative from the Hotel, Denise Heller, Ben Truman, a guest at the Marsham Court, Angelina from Well Groomed who supplied the girls dresses, the Poole Town Crier, David Squire, and last, but by no means least, the Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Mrs. Beryl Baxter, CMgr, MCMI, the judges undertook the difficult task of choosing between the entries.

The format of the competition changed this year with the introduction of Pageboy and Queen Consort positions. In view of this change, it was decided to deviate from our usual rules and allow last years entrants to re-enter what was deemed to be a new competition.

Unfortunately, we had no entrants for the Queen Consort position and so three finalists were eventually chosen to represent Bournemouth headed, for the second year running, by Kelly Everett-Stroud, our Carnival Queen, with Caja Toohey as Carnival Princess and Brandon Clarke as Pageboy. They will serve for the the 2009/2010 season. All three rode at the head of this years Bournemouth Carnival procession, and will represent Bournemouth at many other carnivals throughout this season.

Next year we are looking for more entries please!
